Owl protection project

In 2018, under the Mie Biodiversity Partnership program, the Yokkaichi Plant concluded an agreement with Yokkaichi-Nishi High School, Mie Prefecture, and three related cities and towns that are working together to protect owls designated by Mie Prefecture as Near- Threatened.

Employees of the Yokkaichi Plant have installed solar panels and cameras at one of the nest boxes put up by the students of Yokkaichi-Nishi High School to allow video observation of the little-known ecology of owls.

Environmental classes for children

In addition to environmental classes at nearby elementary schools, we have been teaching classes titled “Operation CO2 Reduction” for children at the Yokkaichi Pollution and Environmental Museum since 2018. Elementary school students and their parents have taken these classes to learn about global warming through experiments and consider how to live in an environmentally friendly way. Furthermore, these classes had opportunities to visit our clean room in virtual reality to learn more about the Yokkaichi Plant.

Planting flowers at the Yokkaichi Plant

In order to raise environmental awareness, improve the corporate image, and create a relaxing environment for employees, the Yokkaichi Plant has been conducting the Flo-WA* project since June 2017 so as to have flowers around each fab. In November 2019, the Yokkaichi Plant held the fifth replanting event, in which many employees participated from each division.

* Expressing our vision of the project, "WA" is associated in Japanese with such concepts as harmony among colleagues, sharing, relief, and laughter.

Participation in environment exhibitions

The Yokkaichi Plant has been participating in local environment exhibitions every year since 2008. We promote community engagement at a booth where visitors can walk around our cleanroom in virtual reality and experience demos using KIOXIA’s products.

2017 Distinguished Service Award for collection of plastic bottle caps

Since October 2008, the Yokkaichi Plant has been conducting a campaign to collect caps from used plastic bottles and sell them to recycling companies through a nonprofit organization called the Ecocap Movement, which donates vaccines for children in developing countries.

In April 2015, we changed the recipient of bottle caps to Re-Lifestyle, also a nonprofit organization. The Yokkaichi Plant received the 2017 Distinguished Service Award from Re-Lifestyle in recognition of its three-year contribution*.

* The Yokkaichi Plant collected roughly 7.5 tons of caps (equivalent to approximately 6,000 polio vaccines).
